Morphology, Vocabulary, and the Sciences of Reading with Journey Swafford

October 21 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

In this full-day interactive workshop, hosted by the University of Maine Training Center for Comprehensive Literacy, participants will explore how teaching word parts — prefixes, roots, and suffixes — can directly improve students’ vocabulary knowledge, decoding skills, and reading comprehension. The workshop will examine how morphological awareness supports both early literacy development in the primary grades and content-area literacy in upper elementary through high school. Using hands-on activities, classroom demonstrations, and research-based practices, participants will engage in collaborative planning, analyze student work samples, and walk away with ready-to-use resources including word-building activities, and lesson planning templates. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Journey Swafford, Ph.D., is a Reading Recovery Trainer, a Comprehensive Intervention Model and Successful Start Facilitator, and serves as the Executive Director of Paths to Literacy at Georgia State University.
