Medieval Jesus: A Life (online)

January 31, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Spring 2022 Department of History Colloquium Series begins Monday, Jan. 31 at 3:00 p.m. with a talk by Brett Whalen (UNC-Chapel Hill) titled “Medieval Jesus: A Life.” Whalen will explore the meaning of Jesus Christ in the Middle Ages. How did Christians, among others, continually “remold” Jesus to fit their needs during the thousand-plus years that spanned the ancient and modern eras? What can those iterations of Jesus reveal to us about the politics, religious values, and social mores of the medieval past? By tackling questions such as these, Medieval Jesus will offer a new cultural history of Christian identities during the Middle Ages with implications for Jesus’s enduring cultural presence in the modern world.
