Penny Kittle: Engage and Empower Adolescents with Four Essential Studies: Essay Writing, Book Clubs, Poetry and Digital Composition

Penny Kittle teaches freshman composition at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. She was a teacher and literacy coach in public schools for 34 years and has authored or co-authored nine books on reading and literacy. In this workshop from the University Training Center for Reading Recovery and Maine Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy, Kittle will guide participants through study and practice of four key strategies for increasing student engagement and success with literacy. She will share the practices that help students develop discussion skills in both book clubs and writing groups. Attendees will examine the moves writers make in story, poetry and short essays to deepen understanding of the flexibility and power of writing craft across genres.
