Pandemic Pivot: Innovation and Resilience in Maine’s Seafood Community

Join the Alliance for Maine’s Marine Economy for a conversation with Jen Levin, Gulf of Maine Sashimi, and Mike Gaffney, Eros Oysters, to learn how COVID-19 has impacted their businesses and what innovative strategies they are using to adapt to changing markets and consumer needs. Gulf of Maine Sashimi specializes in supreme quality seafood for high-end chefs, and lost 100% of their customers when the pandemic hit. Determined to keep showing up for the boats, the business transitioned to direct-to-consumer marketing, bringing along with it a myriad of changes in how they do business. Eros is a family oyster farm on Robinhood Cove in Georgetown selling direct to chefs both in and out of state as well as direct to consumers. They’re also the principal dealer/shipper for a cooperative including eight additional farms in the Cove. Their pivot has been an acceleration of the original business plan — diversification. The goal of this event is to share stories and innovations, and to inspire people to try new things. This event is hosted by the Alliance for Maine’s Marine Economy (Alliance), and sponsored by the Maine Technology Institute, Maine Community Foundation, and Alliance members.
