SUMMARY:Workshop: Erin Manning
DESCRIPTION:Artist\, philosopher\, dancer and teacher Erin Manning will be conducting a workshop on Monday April 15 at 10 a.m. in the CML Conference Room in Fogler library. To sign up please email Johanna Cairns at johanna.cairns@umit.maine.edu as space is limited. The etymology of art comes from the meaning of the word still retained in German: “the way.” This workshop will explore the role of an object in the processual exploration and ask how the object catalyzes a process and explore the social\, cultural and political consequences of emphasizing “the way” over the concept of the object as such. Key concepts explored will be time and intuition\, both according to how philosopher Bergson defines them. Other relevant philosophers will be Deleuze and Guattari\, Simondon and Whitehead. But there need be no familiarity with any of these philosophers: we will work from scratch and go from there. Please come prepared with a short informal presentation about the art of time in your practice.

SUMMARY:The American Lobster in a Changing Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Fundamental changes have occurred over the past few decades in the climate and food web of the Northwest Atlantic\, as well as the economics of fishing. After decades of relative stability in the fishery\, we need to improve our understanding of Homarus americanus in the context of its changing environment. The symposium is timely as fishery managers grapple with how to integrate traditional single-species management with the mandate for ecosystem-based approaches\, and because major research initiatives are generating interesting results across the species' range. The symposium will be a forum for new findings\, aiming to identify region-wide research gaps and priorities\, and catalyze new research collaborations.
