Trip Through Space
NEW Planetarium Show! A tour of what's up there from the glittering stars, past the planets and out to deep space, this journey explores space. The Trip explains how each celestial body behaves and appears to our eyes or the astronomer's telescope. Watch the moon orbit, Orion battle Taurus and stars being born on this race to space. Trip Through Space is suitable for the whole family ages 6 and up.

Hancock County Master Gardener Volunteer Training
Friday mornings (8:30 - noon) from January 27th to May 4th, 2012 (plus 2 Saturdays 2/11 and 3/17), an intensive training in horticulture, focusing on growing fruits and vegetables. The purpose of the Master Gardener program is to provide horticultural training to prepare you to do gardening-related volunteer work in the local community. After completing the training, you are expected to volunteer at least 40 hours within one year on an already established project. Deadline to apply is Wednesday January 4th, 2012. 2012 Maine Grain Workshop - Commercial Production for Food and Feed
Come hear what's going on with food and organic feed-grade markets and how to produce quality grains. A panel of grain buyers will discuss what they're looking for. Farmer and co-owner of Farmer Ground Flour, Thor Oechsner, will talk about growing, handling, and processing food and feed grains. Elizabeth Dyck, Organic Growers' Research and Information-Sharing Network, will share her insights from working with farmers in New York and Pennsylvania to supply grains to local markets. Jake Dyer, of UMaine and Qualey Farms, will tell how he's reduced feed costs for the UMaine dairy herd by growing his own barley. Alice Percy, Treble Ridge Farm, will talk about small scale production of feed and food grains.

Earth's Wild Ride
Earth's Wild Ride is a story from 200 years in the future that features a moon colonist and his grandchildren as they watch the earth during a solar eclipse. The grandfather recalls the nature of the blue planet where he was born and its most dramatic events including volcano eruptions, dinosaur extinctions and torrential storms. This Omnidome spectacle crosses time and space through computer animation and immerses viewers in the future and past on Earth's Wild Ride. A tour of the season's night sky, it constellations and planets demonstrates the lovely views Earthlings still enjoy today in Maine. Suitable for viewers age 9 and up.

Spend Sunday afternoon, with Steve Sader, Professor of Forest Resources at UMaine. Learn the basics of trees and shrubs identification, and gain insight on bud survival strategies. Hand lenses and magnifying glasses are helpful but not necessary. Bring snowshoes if needed or reserve a pair at Hirundo.

Meet at the Parker Reed shelter in the Hirundo Wildlife Refuge. Take Gate 1 and follow the dirt road for ~1/2 mile to the Pine Tree parking lot. The shelter is further on the left. Children will sing Follow the Drinking Gourd while learning how the sun and stars move throughout the year and how to find a very important star that helped guide slaves escaping to the north in the 1800s. The song the slaves used as a map to the north is a catchy tune that will have the whole family humming and the story is illustrated with the artwork of Maine author, Jeannette Winter. Ice Worlds examines the close ties of life and water on Earth and the changing climate that will affect us all. It is a spectacular exploration of icebergs, massive glaciers, and their importance to Earth using satellite data, photography and computer animation. Other distant worlds where ice and water abound, and the winter constellations above Maine's snow covered fields are included in this adventure. Sheep Shearing School-beginner level
sheep shearing school is a beginner level school and will feature teams of shearing instructors. This school is limited to 22 participants with a fee of $35.00 each.
